Friday Update, 10/19/2007
Howdy!
It's been a while since we've updated this site, but never fear! FreeGeek/Chicago is still very much open for business, and getting better every day.

We're pleased to announce the addition of Steve Ramos and Tim St. Croix to our staff. Tim is a self-taught Linux wizard who solves problems that have stumped the rest of us in the course of an afternoon. Steve is a self-taught all-around PC hardware guy who gives a better tour and orientation than guys who showed him the ropes. They've been volunteering with FreeGeek for months and we're all really excited that they're now willing to sit through meetings and receive copious administrivial emails.

It's a little hard to believe, but FreeGeek/Chicago has been operating out of the basement space at 3411 W Diversey for two years. Even harder to believe, we may finally be getting a lease! Carl Davidson, our benefactor, is leaving to travel the country raising the rabble, so we're currently in talks with the owner of the building to have our own contract on the space. That means, theoretically, working bathrooms and the chance to control our own electrical circuits. (Not to mention having more than two of them to work with!) Needless to say, we're very excited about this, and will be on the look-out for plumbers and electricians... hint, hint.

Since May, FreeGeek/Chicago has been hosting OpenBuild days on Fridays as well Sundays. These Friday sessions have been helpful and well-attended, but they've also put a strain on our staff. After all, noone gets paid here, so asking two days a week was starting to get to us. At our last staff meeting, we decided to cut back from every Friday to every other Friday, and use that time to work on internal stuff. Regular volunteers are still welcome from 12 to 5 every other Friday; after all, we need all the help we can get. These Friday work days will be listed on our calendar. We will still be open every Sunday from 11 to 5 for our OpenBuild program, so if you're more interested in building boxen than in sweeping and organizing, keep showing up then!

By the time you've read this, this site should be served from a box co-located at Tilted Planted LTD. This is an upgrade for us... we can now do recurring events in our calendar section (so there will actually be something there!), we will have better control over the content-management system that runs this here site, and all in all you should see more activity here.
So keep checking back!
See you at the Geek,
